Natural History Notes: Also known as the Screw conch. Characteristics: Maximum reported size: 374 mm. This big, heavy shell has a wide variety of shades of brown on its exterior, from pale to very dark. The colors usually form curved patches on the larger spiral cords, and are interspersed with patches of creamy white. The interior of the aperture is flushed with orange. The ovate operculum is brown, darker interiorly, and has thin concentric ridges on the exterior. The teleoconch whorls are irregularly convex due to uneven former varices, and the body whorl is more inflated with a distinct shoulder. Wide spiral cords are more rounded at the shoulder of the body whorl, and flatter below the periphery. The cords are created by incised, single or paired spiral lines that form grooves. The grooves are gloser together below the suture and at the base. In these regions, the narrower ridges are crossed by crowded axial riblets. Numerous white lirae, some of them branching, cross the dark brown columella and parietal wall. The soft parts of the animal are yellowish, with coffee-colored markings that darken toward the margin of the foot. The tentacles are yellow- and black- banded.
