Habitat: This shrimp species can be found in habitats such as estuaries, mangroves and lagoons. Although it can be fairly common in some areas, this species can be difficult to collect because it likes to reside in shallow burrows made of mud. Distribution: Alpheus chacei is common in the waters of tropical western Atlantic, from the Caribbean to southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: A. chacei is closely related to two species from the Alpheus genus, called A. antepaenultimus and A. paenultimanus. A. chacei differs from those species by the absence of spines, present on the ventral part of the major and the minor chelipeds. Depth: Present in the intertidal, to a depth of about 5 m. Characteristics: Alpheus chacei has a body length of up to 40 mm.
