Habitat: Intertidal sand flat, shallow seagrass sand flat of a depth of 0.5 – 1.0m, about 15 m from a sand beach with a few mangrove trees. Distribution: This species has been reported in the Western Atlantic, more specifically in Atol das Rocas, Brazil and in the region of Bocas del Toro, Panama. Natural History Notes: The new species was named in the honor of Dr. Martin L. Christoffersen from the Universidade Federal de Paraíba, João Pessoa, for his significant contributions to the knowledge of the Brazilian alpheid and other caridean shrimps. Some morphological variations have been noted between the specimens collected in Bocas del Toro and in Atol das Rocas. The specimens from Bocas del Toro have a short and blunt rostrum and a broad telson; whereas the specimens from Atol das Rocas have a broad and triangular rostrum and a narrower telson. Characteristics: The carapace size of this new species varies between the sexes. The male has a carapace length ranging between 6.7 and 6.8 mm and a tail length ranging between 19.7 and 20.1 mm. In the case of the female, the carapace length has a greater variance, with a length varying between 6.1and 7.1 mm and a tail length varying between 17.2 and 22.2 mm. This species has a background color mostly transparent with several reddish bands, but with one broad band present on the lateral side of the pleurae. The dorsal part of the carapace is speckled with red chromatophores (pigment-containing cells) and the central dorsal portions of abdominal somites are colorless. The antennal peduncle, the walking legs, the rostral region and the tail are semitransparent but we can distinguish several red chromatophores. The animal has a smooth carapace. The rostrum (foremost extension of the carapace) is usually short and has a triangular shape. The eyes are hidden when the animal is observed from a dorsal and a lateral view, and are partly hidden from a frontal view. The mouthpart is typical for this genus, with the third maxiliped fairly stout. The major cheliped (claw) has a short and robust ischium, a carpus cup-shaped, fingers about 3/5 length of palm and a lateral face with a narrow, longitudinal dorsal depression extending from the dorsal notch to the linea impressa. Gill/exopod formula typical for genus: 5 pleurobranchs (P1-5); 1 arthrobranch (Mxp3); 0 podobranch (Mxp2); 2 lobed epipods (Mxp1-2), 5 strap-like epipods = mastigobranchs (Mxp3, P1-4), 5 sets of setobranchs (P1-5); 3 exopods (Mxp1-3).
