Distribution: Found living along the Santa Maria coast line (Caribbean coast of Columbia) in moderately exposed to sheltered reef systems, attached to corals and lose rubble in depths from 14m to 20m in depths (J.M. Diaz, L.A. Escolar and L.E. Velásquez 1990). Natural History Notes: This species is often confused with another Western Atlantic Nodipecten species called Nodipecten fragosus. Nodipecten nodosus is also the ancestor of the Pacific Ocean species N. subnodosus. Depth: 35-150 m Characteristics: Nodipecten nodosus has 9 to 10 ribs and does not have the tendency to develop nodes on the ribs like the other species Nodipecten fragosus. The right valve never shows nodes. The color pattern consists of a red, brown or orange background with some spots.
