Habitat: Present in muddy intertidal flats. Natural History Notes: This species builds a permanent burrow in mud or fine sediment, that will have a J-shape and the end curved upward. A burrow can be up to 51 cm deep. Each burrow will have two siphons that will reach the sediment surface. This animal is also an intertidal filter feeder. Characteristics: Tagelus plebeius can reach a length of 7.6 cm. Its shape is elongates and the valves are also rounded and glossy yellow. Weak radial ridge present posteriorly. Surface smooth except for fine concentric lines. Notes: T. plebeius, is an economically important species as a source of food in many countries such as Chile, China and Spain. In Chile alone, more than 4000 tons were harvested per year.
