Habitat: Inhabit shallow and mid-range coral reefs, walls, and rocky areas. Exterior surface frequently covered with Parazoanthus parasiticus, and are often associated with Distribution: Caribbean, Bermuda and Brazil Depth: 20 - 75 ft. Characteristics: Shape: Tubular single or ramose, sometimes funnel shaped. Tube walls 2-5 mm in thickness, 2-10 cm in diameter, and up to 50 cm high. Color: Gray brownish outside and inside. Consistency: Compressible and very spongy. Surface: Conulose (1-10 mm high) and smooth in between conules. Completely smooth specimens were common in Bocas. Apertures: Oscules scattered in internal tube walls (3-6 mm Ø). Tube openings few cm in diameter usually with a crowned appeareance. Skeleton: Spicules are oxeas sometimes slightly curved with a reported size that ranges from 80-160 µm in length and 1- 11 µm in width (Zea, 1987). Ectosomal skeleton: A tangential reticulation of sponging fibers were primaries (25-50 µm) , and secondaries (20-25 µm) can be distinguished. Fibers cored by 1 to 10 spicules. Choanosomal skeleton: a system of fiberfascicles (130-800 µm in diameter) that branch and a complementary reticulation where primaries, secondaries and thin tertiaries can be distinguished.
