Habitat: Found intertidally on seawalls or leaving trails in muddy sand; also occasionally in Natural History Notes: The triton preys on juvenile Characteristics: Maximum reported size: 75 mm. Soft parts of the animal are creamy white, with tiny purple or purple-brown spots. The protoconch has 5.5 whorls. The periostracum is thin and yellow brown. The shell beneath it is usually dirty white, though some shells have some brown or purplish coloring, and occasional others are orange-brown with white spiral bands. The operculum is yellow-brown or sometimes darker, and ovate. The inside of the small aperture is stained with dark orange-brown. It is bordered by a thickened glossy white parietal shield. The parietal wall has one or two prominent lirae, and the lower columella has about six. The outer lip has seven triangular teeth formed by the ends of strong lirae. The shell has an elevated spire, coarsely sculptured with nodulose spiral cords and weak axial ribs. Irregular axial ribs give the shell a coarsely beaded appearance. The siphonal canal is slender and recurved.
